Avocado mainly consists of water and fats, which are quite healthy and are responsible for shaping its unique taste and allowing its versatility of use.
The oil extracted from the fruit is very healthy and is a common ingredient in both cosmetics and in the kitchen.
The Basic Information
The avocado tree is a laurel plant and originates from South America. It bears the pear-shaped fruits, weighting between 300 grams and up to 1.5 kg each. These fruits have the highest fat content of all vegetables.
The oil is extracted either from the still hard fruit, or by crushing and then centrifuging the soft and pitted fruit.
Avocado oil is rich in Vitamin A, C, D and E (alpha-tocopherol), lecithin, squalene, linoleic acid (approx. 10%), palmitic acid, Palmitoleic acid, stearic acid and phytosterols.
It also contains magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron, making it a real powerhouse for dry, broken hair.
Because it is extracted from the fruit by cold pressing, no valuable ingredients are lost during the manufacturing process. This means that this product is just as rich in nutrients and vitamins as the fruit itself.
Avocado Oil Benefits for Hair
Its ingredients and consistency make it shiny, elastic and supple, making it easier to comb and less prone to split ends and hair breakage.
Since it has a moisturizing effect, even sensitive, dry scalps benefit from its application.
Since this oil has a high amount of saturated fatty acids, it can withstand higher temperatures, when used for cooking.
Because the fats of avocado oil can penetrate deeply into the strands, it makes brittle and stressed hair soft and supple again.
The oil of the avocado wraps around your locks like a film and prevents it from drying out. At the same time it offers protection against harsh environment.
Because this oil has a lipid-replenishing effect, it gives relief to the itchy and irritated scalp, as well as helping with minor scalp eczema.
Avocado Oil for Hair and Scalp

How to Use Avocado Oil on Hair?
1. Try this hair treatment recipe – collect these ingredients:
- 2 ripe avocados or 2 tablespoons of avocado oil,
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil,
- 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil,
- A few drops of lemon juice.
Mix the ingredients and massage the mixture onto your strands. Let it sit on for 30 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
To enhance the effect of this treatment, you can either add 2 tablespoons of Shea butter to the mixture, or 1 tablespoon of Aloe Vera Gel.
Melt Shea butter at approximately 25° C (77 F) before using it.
2. You can apply avocado oil or its pulp directly on the hair. Cover your head, then after about an hour wash your head with shampoo. You can also leave it overnight to get even better results.
3. For a long-lasting care, combine 1 tablespoon of this oil and 1 tablespoon of honey, and massage onto wet hair once a week.
4. You can add it in your conditioner, treatment or mask in order to get even more benefit.
Alternatively you can use it as a natural substitute for these products – just apply it generously to your dry hair and leave it on for a few hours, or even overnight (you will need to rinse it out with a mild shampoo the next day).
5. To use it for daily care, pour a small amount on your palms, rub them together, then apply to the tips of your hair. This won’t give you a greasy look, but will nourish with nutrients and moisture.
Hair Oil for a Dehydrated and Irritated Scalp
You can massage this homemade avocado hair oil onto your scalp once a week.
You will need:
- 1 teaspoon of avocado oil,
- 1 teaspoon each of lavender, eucalyptus and chamomile essential oil,
- 2 tablespoons of distilled water.
Using a water bath, heat the distilled water to a maximum of 30 Celsius degrees (86 Fahrenheit). Don’t make the water too hot, since it will evaporate the active ingredients of the essential oils.
Mix the avocado oil into the warm water while stirring vigorously. Gradually add lavender, eucalyptus and chamomile oil one by one. Keep stirring until the essential oils are mixed in.
How to Use This Hair Oil
Pour some oil into your palm and rub the palms together. Then massage the oil carefully into the scalp and strands. Then spread the remaining oil along the lengths up to the ends.
Let it sit for about 20 minutes, then wash it out with a mild shampoo and plenty of lukewarm water.
Hair Mask for Split Ends
Avocado oil helps with split ends because wraps around every single strand like a film, making them look fuller and healthier.
The brittle hair becomes smoother and more elastic and gets a silky shine.
For an efficient treatment with avocado oil against split ends you need the following ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon of ground flax seeds or chia seeds (or you can use yogurt or even a mashed banana),
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil,
- 1 tablespoon of avocado oil,
- 4 tablespoons of Henna powder.
Make a thick paste out of ground flax seeds or chia seeds and clean water (just use as much water as needed to achieve the thick consistency).
Take a bowl, and add in it the seed paste, avocado and olive oil. Mix the ingredients with a fork. Then place the bowl in a hot water bath and heat the mixture to a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius (104 F). Do not overheat it. Then stir in Henna powder, spoon by spoon.
Wash your hair and dry it with a towel. Do not rub it, but rather place the strands between two halves of the folded towel and squeeze them out carefully. Then apply the thick paste along the whole length.
Wrap your head first with a plastic and then with a hot towel. The warmth allows the active ingredients to act properly. Leave this hair treatment on your head for about 30 minutes then wash your head with a mild shampoo and plenty of warm water.
The henna in this homemade mask strengthens the damaged hair. The olive and avocado oil give it enough moisture and shine. The oils act as a protective layer around the strands, and the seeds nourish with protein.
